So you wanna be a star? Part two Whatever class of music you are in, you want to outline your definition of success. If your definition is ‘being a wealthy and celebrated superstar’, then, well ‘good luck ‘.. But if your definition is ‘being a creative artist doing what you need to do in life by sharing your music with people who will listen’, then you must succeed. And if you have the bottle to adhere to your own sound and style, your own convictions of how your music should sound, then you have rather more possibility of success over the long term. But be warned - flying in face of convention, of what’s current, is always hard.
But trends fade and die - original talent and music doesn’t! If you have recorded an album yourself then get independent feedback, both musical and technical. Acquaintances and family will always say your music is great ( and hey, that is fine, you want that support ). the person that tells you everything you do is great may be very good for your ego, but they are of no practical use at all! The oppressive reality is that you will need good useful criticism from varied sources who know what they are talking about. Another tip is hunt down your local recording studio and pay for a studio engineers time ( or better still the studio owner if you can ), simply to hear your recording. Pick their brains and ask their guidance on every aspect of your recording.
I did this myself which was invaluable. You need to ensure you can relate to the studio engineer and they can relate to what you are doing. But at the day’s end, you are paying them simply to listen and to offer you the advantage of their experience. The fact that this is so vital is really because regularly when starting doing a first album you wont have the data or equipment to make it sound anything higher than a demo. Sadly, so many expectant musicians get so close to their creation that they fail to hear the music is not as good as they suspect it is, especially on the techie side! It is often good to bear in mind that there are likely many thousands of folk round the world ( perhaps millions, who knows? ) doing the same you are. There’s no absence of studios turning out music and no dearth of organisations, especially on the web, telling you the proper way to hit it big. Bieber just appears too nice a child to take the type of gleeful pleasure that Kutcher did in punking folk. Perhaps he would like to flatten his squeaky-clean image and show a diabolical side. Punk’d debuted on MTV in 2003 and fast became a big hit for the network; it was kind of like Candid Camera for Generation Y, but rather than fooling the ordinary guy, MTV took it up a gear and set its sights on celebs.
In each segment, some hapless celeb would become the subject of Kutcher and company’s practical jokes. I suspect one of the key appeals of the show was that it took the celebrities down a notch or 2, humanizing them a bit in the method. Their sense of connection is palpable and sensual, cast eye contact stimulating the anticipation, as you nearly discover yourself wondering who is going to ‘win’ at this music game. Yet, everyone wins, the audience even asked into the performance through a cast member who initiates a clap-and-response session.
