Zen Internet Enlists for IWF Membership
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has found another candidate in its increasing list of ISP members. This time it is Zen Internet, one of the largest ISPs in the UK.
Set up in the year 1996, the IWF is a self-regulatory organization that monitors the internet for child sexual abuse content and works closely with the government as well as police departments. The public is provided with the organization’s website and a hotline where they can report any unlawful content. The organization also has ties with other similar bodies that monitor online content in different parts of the world.
Recently the organization has also started looking into cases related to racial hatred on the internet, and a recent controversy involving Wikipedia brought it a lot of negative media publicity. Although it has sworn that its assessment of the sites that depict illegal content is carried out independently, many believe that the body is out for profit or is secretly controlled by the FBI.
Earlier, Zen Internet was considered as a symbol of resilience by IWF critics as it had not obtained membership with the IWF despite being a big broadband provider in the
Zen has still not confirmed reasons for signing up with the IWF and has refused to divulge details regarding its newly acquired status. However, its name is clearly displayed as a member organization on the IWF website. Even the IWF was unavailable for any comment on the matter.
