Cutting: Throughout the Years

The sport of cutting has evolved since its birth in 19th century. With the creation of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) in 1946, cutting further entrenched itself in the world of equine sports worldwide. The sport has extended it popularity to other countries. In Canada and Australia, cutting has received a large following. The National Cutting Horse Association does not only provide the rules of the sport or just keep track of the records; the NCHA provides society tons of opportunities and bolsters the equine industry. Through sponsorships, the NCHA has produced six major events: (1) the World Championship Futurity, (2) the World Finals, (3) the Western National Championships, (4) the Eastern National Championships, (4) the Super Stakes, (5) the Super Stakes Classic, and (6) the Summer Cutting Spectacular. All events are estimated to bring over $70 million to host cities, further illustrating the economic value of the sport. The NCHA has various categories in each event, and has produced a huge number of champions and Hall of Fame inductees since 1946. The list includes 2-time (2006-2007) Open category champion Dual Rey Me, 2008 Open Category Champion Meradas Sue Blue, Hall of Famers Vegas Boy and Poco Lena. Several champion riders include Greg Smith and Scott Amos.
